Metis, in Greek mythology means wisdom, skill or craft after a goddess of the same name. She was the first wife of Zeus, king of all gods, and the goddess of prudence and deep thought. However, goddess Metis was a threat to Zeus because as per a prophecy she would bear children more powerful than Zeus himself, who would eventually overthrow him. Fearing this, Zeus tricked Metis to turn herself into a fly and swallowed her. But Metis had already conceived Athena, their daughter, by then and created a shield to protect Athena inside Zeus’ stomach which caused him great pain. Finally, Athena came out of Zeus’ head, fully grown and clad in armour. Athena, similar to her mother is the greek goddess for wisdom and war.

Greek mythological events and it’s characters are frequently referred to and discussed in works of various western philosophers and psychologists such as Frederik Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud and others.
